Registered Charity Number 267003

The Spelthorne Mental Health Association shop – Charity at Home located at 66 Church Road (Opposite the War Memorial), is Ashford’s Oldest Charity Shop, and the only one dedicated to a purely local cause.

Charity at Home (SMHA) has been raising money for over 40 years, since it was founded in 1973 helping Spelthorne Residents recover from Mental Illness.

Spelthorne Mental Health Association runs a day centre for 18-65 year olds recovering from mental illness, providing companionship and activities such as Art, Woodwork, Soft Crafts, Dressmaking, Cooking, Papercraft and Relaxation, to help people recover from mental distress, stay well and enjoy a better quality of life.

SMHA are also looking to start keep fit sessions, music sessions, a choir and gardening group.

SMHA have moved around the area a couple of times over the years but are now settled in the peaceful and pleasant surroundings of Beresford House, the old park keeper’s house in Fordbridge Park, off Kingston Road where they have been since 2014.

SMHA run two minibuses bringing clients to and from the day centre from all areas of Spelthorne. one of which is funded by three county councillors. They are also used to take clients on day trips to places of interest or just to the supermarket.

Clients also help with fundraising, they organise an annual sponsored walk and 10 pin bowling match.

Over the last 40 years SMHA have helped many people to put their lives back together again after Mental Illness, none of which wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of their team in the Charity Shop who help to raise the Vital funds SMHA need, as well as the generosity and goodwill of donors and customers.

SMHA is funded mainly by the funds they raise through the Charity at Home shop, and do not normally receive grants towards their work.
