M&S denies purchase of multi-stroy carpark

Marks & Spencer has denied claims it intends to buy Ashford ‘s multi-storey car park.

Rumours circulated online that the retailer had bought the Church Road site put up for sale by Spelthorne Borough Council in 2015 following a public consultation the previous year asking residents and local businesses for their views.

When asked about the M&S rumours, a spokesman for the council said: “Spelthorne [Borough] Council is looking at various options for the development of the site currently occupied by the Ashford multi-storey car park but these are commercially sensitive and we are unable to give more details at this point in time.”

It is not the first time rumours about the sale of the car park have been dismissed.

In December 2015, Spelthorne Council’s Bulletin magazine claimed that Lidl Uk had “successfully bid to purchase the site”.

However this was later denied by Lidl and the council said they would start “revisiting the alternative proposals” with a decision expected early last year.
